The Argentine Ambassador to Bangladesh, Marcelo Carlos CESA, paid his first courtesy call on Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 4 March 2026.
At the outset, the Ambassador congratulated the Foreign Minister on assuming his duties and conveyed the Argentine government’s best wishes to the newly elected government led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. He said that bilateral relations are poised to further strengthen under the new leadership. The Foreign Minister reiterated Bangladesh’s firm commitment to consolidate and deepen the long-standing friendly relations between the two countries.
During the meeting, both sides identified priority areas for enhancing cooperation, particularly expanding bilateral trade with a focus on diversifying exports and imports, strengthening technical cooperation in agriculture, advancing sports cooperation including effective implementation of existing MoUs on football, and exploring opportunities for cooperation in energy trade and supply chain partnerships and increasing garment exports from Bangladesh. In this context, the Foreign Minister proposed a multi-sectoral dialogue among relevant partners with a focused agenda to advance bilateral cooperation. The Foreign Minister appreciated Argentina’s recent agreement to reopen the Embassy of Argentina in Dhaka and the Embassy of Bangladesh in Buenos Aires. He stressed Bangladesh’s commitment to operate its Resident Mission in Buenos Aires as soon as possible to further institutionalize bilateral relations. The Foreign Minister also sought Argentina’s valuable support for Bangladesh’s candidacy for the presidency of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Earlier, the Argentine Ambassador paid a courtesy call on Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaid Islam, MP. The State Minister emphasized the unique people-to-people ties between the two countries, especially through football, and proposed structural cooperation in the development of youth and women’s football.
The State Minister emphasized the importance of establishing a platform like the Bangladesh-Argentina Chamber of Commerce to enhance business networking and enhance structured private sector involvement. He also proposed to import ready-made garments as well as pharmaceuticals, ceramics, and jute products from Bangladesh.
The meeting ended with both sides expressing optimism about the future trajectory of Bangladesh-Argentina relations and reiterating their joint commitment to elevate the partnership to a dynamic and multidimensional level through concrete and result-oriented steps.
